Sept 2022 Treasurer Report

Oklahoma Fur Bearers Alliance Treasurers Report September 2022

Hello from cooler and greener southern Oklahoma. We have been getting the much-needed rain that we have missed all summer. It is amazing how a little bit of water will turn the brown crisp Bermuda grass green. Diesel prices have dropped about .75 cents, but still way to high. Lots of soybeans and corn stalks have been baled because they did not make. There is very little hay. I sure hope next year is a better year for the farmers and ranchers. I for one are sure looking forward to trapping season. Dove season has opened and there are a few doves around here but not many. Deer season is just around the corner also. Man I am sure looking forward to cooler weather.

I received a text from John Daniel that our own Shannon Sheffert has made Director of the year with the NTA. John stated that Shannon was always helping whenever and whatever they needed at NTA. Thanks, from the OFBA for everything that you do. We are proud of you.

We are looking forward to the OFBA Fall Convention on October 21-22, 2022, at the Okmulgee County Fairgrounds. We will have the Fish Fry Friday night and auction after it. We ask if you have anything for the Auction, please bring it Friday. We are getting the demos and vendors together. Some of the vendors that have said they will be here are Okie Cable and Trap, Dave Daigle with Minnesota Trapline, Dakota Harmon with Peaceable Creek Fur, Gaylen Oppel Oklahoma, Trapper Adrian Art New Mexico, Jim Beavers New Mexico, Michael Taylor Texas, and The Turtle Man from Oklahoma. I am looking forward to seeing what Matt Yocham comes up for the Demo area. I know that it will look Great. If you have any ideas or want to see something at the Convention, please get in contact with Brad Thomure at 918-944-8673. Noah Smith has donated a fur handling weekend to the auction. If you want to learn how-to put-up fur this, is it. We still have the Savage .223 with scope that we are selling Raffle tickets for. They are $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00. You can get in touch with me, or Gary Jarman and we will get the tickets to you. The drawing for the gun will be October 22, 2022, at the Fall Convention. We will have more posted on our website and Facebook as we get more vendors and demos. We have enlisted Trapper Adrian to come up with another design for our tee shirts and he has out did himself. Come by the OFBA table and see what we have. We will have several new crafts vendors for the ladies, so guys bring your wife or girlfriend just not both.

We will have 2 Youth Trapping Camps again this year. The north camp will be at Lake Carl Blackwell near Stillwater, Ok. And the south camp will be at Lake Waurika near Waurika, Ok. You will need to get in touch with Shannon Sheffert at 405-742-7884 and he can get you all the information on the camps.

We are still needing 3 trap tags to go on the boards that will be auctioned off. Please send them to me if you can or bring them to the Fall Convention.

Remember to get a kid involved with trapping as they are our future. Thanks R.C. Edgar

Hello from southern Oklahoma. We are just starting to get the much-needed rain that we have been missing. Hope everyone is doing fine. The river is up, and we have been catching some fish. Hope everyone got their turkey that went hunting this spring. My grandson and I got to go to the Texas Trappers spring Convention. We got to see a lot of old friends and met some new ones. January treasurers Report

Oklahoma Fur Bearers Alliance Treasurers Report January 2021 Hello from Hot and dry Southern Oklahoma. 78 degrees for Christmas was crazy. Global Warming, I guess. You didn’t have to worry about the ground freezing or have to salt any traps in down here. Now it’s January and we are using salt and very little moisture. No rain this time of the year makes very little hay in the spring. Hopefully we will get some rain before it’s too late. We lost a good trapper and friend Noel Carruthers on December 3, 2021. Noel was a past Vice President, past President and was one of our Directors. Noel always did more than had ever asked him to do. He always went out of his way to setup and help clean up all of our events. He always had a supply of fish that you could depend on. Noel always helped out at the Youth Camps and even donated a few cage traps. He was a cat trapping master. Noel had stories that went on forever and ever. His stories never changed from year to year. Noel enjoyed people and life. He was a very good friend and will be greatly missed. We lost Maurice Gray, longtime fur buyer and friend. He was born on September 16, 1932 in McAlester to Tom and Florence (Smith) Gray. He married Marcella White on August 16, 1952 in McAlester. He loved bluegrass music, hunting, fishing, gardening and was a fur buyer for 50 years. March 2, 2019 Maurice received a plaque from Jerrod Davis Fur Bearer Biologist with The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation recognizing him for all of the years that he was a fur buyer. Maurice was always at the OFBA Fur Sales buying fur or helping someone with there fur. Maurice will be greatly missed by all. Youth Camps were a great success again this year. There were approximately 140 people that attended both camps. We have some of the best cooks you could ask for. They allow the Instructors to help the kids learn about trapping and fur handling. There is never a hungry person in camp. Rhonda and David Marsh, Dana and Catie Wyskup have been feeding hungry trappers at all of our youth camps for the past few years. Both camps were a success and I would like to thank everyone that attended and helped out. There were Coyotes, Bobcats, Coons, Opossums, Skunks, Beaver and 1 more Otter from our Stillwater Camp. You could see the excitement in the young trappers faces when it was time to run traps. Everybody that is involved with the Youth Camps go above and beyond to help the kids learn about trapping. I would like to thank everyone involved in the Youth Camps for taking time out of their busy schedules and be involved with the kids. The OFBA Fur Sale will be March 5, 2022 at the Okmulgee Fair Grounds. The doors will open at 7:00 am. We will have a directors meeting after we get the building setup on Friday night. It was voted on to have the Spring Meeting before the sale starts. The Spring meeting will be at 8:00 am and the sale will start at 9:00 am. This is something different than what has been done in the past. We are hoping that we will have more people there for the meeting. Please bring 3 of your trap tags or mail them to me so that we can put them on a coon stretcher that we will auction off at the Fall Convention. We will set up the building on the evening of March 4 and could use any help that we can get. We can use help cleaning up after the fur sale also. We have purchased a Savage .223 that we are going to sell tickets for an OFBA fund raiser. It will be given away at the Fall Convention in 2022. Tickets are $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00. Look for information on Facebook and the website. The Fall Convention will be at the Okmulgee County Fairgrounds on October 14 and 15, 2022. We are starting to get vendors and demos together so if there is something that you would like to see please let us know. The fish fry will be Friday night and the auction after the fish fry. Please bring something that can be put in the auction as this is what helps to pay for the building rent. If you know anybody that is not getting their Trappers Post, please let me know so that we can find out why they are not receiving it. Everybody be safe and hope that you have a good trapping season. Try to introduce someone to trapping. Or take someone along with you for the company. Remember to get a kid involved with trapping as they are our future. Thanks R.C. Edgar

Just got word that Maurice Grey is in bad shape and not expected to last very long. He is the oldest furbuyer and has been buying fur in Oklahoma longer than anyone else. Please pray for him and his family.
